What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a procedure that exfoliates your skin and gets rid of dirt and vellus hair, better known as “peach fuzz.” It’s different from dermabrasion, where an aesthetician or doctor uses a high-speed, rotating brush to exfoliate the skin. With dermaplaning, they use a scalpel or a tool called a dermatome to remove dead skin cells, debris, and fine hairs.

How It Works

With constant exposure to UV rays, pollution, and irritants, the skin may become susceptible to dry skin, wrinkles, blackheads and an unhealthy skin condition. Dermaplaning treatment aims to make your skin’s surface smooth, youthful, and radiant through the use of a specialized blade that removes the top layers of the skin. This can help treat deep scarring from acne, uneven pockmarks on your skin, and even fine lines. It’s also used to remove “peach fuzz,” the short, soft hairs on your face.
The dermaplaning procedure starts with the application of proper skincare products: a cleanser to loosen dead skin cells prior to the dermaplaning. Once the skin is prepped, the doctor or aesthetician will perform the skin resurfacing by positioning the blade at a 45-degree angle and skimming the skin with short motions. The treatment involves facial hair removal as it removes the unwanted skin layer, and can instantly make the skin exfoliated, smoother, and renewed. It usually follows with a moisturizer and sunscreen to top off the skin as a protective layer after the procedure. It takes little to no downtime at all, so you can proceed to your next appointment right after the treatment.

What to Expect

Though dermaplaning is a low-risk procedure, you may experience a few of these side effects:

  • Minor cuts and swollen skin
  • Redness
  • Appearance of whiteheads

It is not advisable to attempt to shave your face at home without proper tools and techniques as this is usually the cause for many patients who have experienced the above-mentioned side effects.
