Melasma

Melasma, also known as “chloasma,” is a common skin condition that causes brown or gray-brown patches to form on the face, particularly on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. It’s more prevalent in women and people with darker skin tones.

Cause: Melasma is triggered by increased melanin production in the skin. Sun exposure, hormonal changes (pregnancy, birth control pills), and genetics are all contributing factors.

History: Melasma has been documented throughout history, with references dating back to ancient Egypt. Similar to rosacea, the understanding of the exact causes and best treatments is still evolving.

Treatment Solutions: While melasma can be stubborn, various treatments can help lighten the patches and improve the appearance of the skin. These include topical medications, sunscreen, chemical peels, and laser therapy.
